Basketball Hoop

A game of basketball involves the teams scoring points this is achieved by getting a ball to go through a basketball hoop .

There are many types of basketball organisers in the world but the most famous is the NBA in America. Their official rules state that the hoop must be 10ft from the ground and that the diameter must be 18in. The net attached to the hoop is commonly between 15 and 18in in length and is made from nylon.

Steel is used to create the metal hoop and is usually coated in a powder to protect it. In competitive games it is connected to a backboard.

When basketball was first created in 1891 at the Springfield College by Dr. James Naismith a peach basket was hung from the balcony in the gym. Somebody would be required to stand by the basket to retrieve the ball when a basket was scored to give back to the players. The drawback of the basket being attached to the balcony was that mischievous people would be able to change the flight of a players shot and either deflect it in or deflect it wide. This prompted the use of the back board. This stopped people from being able to affect play but it also meant that rebound shots could be played off the back board. In 1906 a metal ring with a net was introduced to replace the basket this made it much easier to play the game.

Hoops can be purchased with a spring mechanism attached. This mechanism allows for the hoop to be moved downwards. This means that if pulled whilst performing a move such as the ’slam dunk’ it is able to resist the force put on it but it also makes the move a lot easier. After it has been pulled it returns back to its normal place.

Whilst there are loads of colours of hoops available, red is the most popular. ‘Break away rims’ are a function of more expensive hoop systems. These ‘break away rims’ can easily be broken off if sufficient force is applied. The advantage of this is that the backboard and back plate are not damaged. It is not difficult to replace these rims either. Generally a reasonable price to pay for good quality replacement rims is $30-$50.

Prices of basketball hoops start from $20 for models that attach to a wall. Models that include the spring mechanism cost $300. As a general rule of thumb for basketball hoops you pay for what you get. If you spend a lot on a hoop it will last for years to come. Manufacturers also supply the backboard, base and extension pole with hoops. These start from $80 and can cost over $600. The advantage of these is that there is no need to attach to a wall.

Hoops can also be purchased with adjustable poles these allow for customizable height so that younger players are able to play the game with a basket height relative to their own.

Some producers of basketball hoops include Huffy, Lifetime, Spalding and Hybrid although other producers of basketball hoops are available.
